Big thing some time more harm can be done than good. Releasing birds not native, is a BIG NO NO. Like free ranging Turkey that will breed with the wild turkeys.

Releasing the Giants would be bad as they will breed with the wild Bobs, which are Northern Bobwhite here.

The starling got their start by a lady releasing 13 in NY central park, now we have billons as pest, and they took over nesting homes of native birds like bluebirds,and etc.

Hi..i can assure you though..that the people that are releasing the Falcons know what they are doing...they do alot of hard work and research on how to ensure the Falcons can survive , i am sure they just dont let a baby Falcon out their front door...

...not going to get into a debate about it..its a free world....i remember when i went camping last summer..we came across the cutest little wild quail hen with a bunch of little babies following her around...........IMO the baby's and even the domestic raised adults wont survive very well...i just think its kinda mean..thats all...and i also respect your thoughts/opinions on it....

Redhen, yes I am sure when they released the falcons some did starve. Been checking and the info on how it was done.

Same thing when i release the quail,and pheasants, What I am trying to do is help get a wild flock here. Bobwhite here in Ohio, took a big lost in late 80s Winter.

Also trying to give people what has worked for me.

Know we all cant agree on everything.

Yes I thought it was cruel when they lost the first few Falcons , but they learn Now we have breeding pairs Here in Ohio. They even have a Pair in Columbus with a live webb cam.

Just had to add NATURE is cruel.

My concern for realeasing coturnix and human bred variants of bobwhites is the fact that if it is true that the two can mix breed (hybridize) then this could cause a major problem for wild life...and could make it illegal to even own coturnix. I'd hate to lose my right to own coturnix because of others releasing them and causing hybridization. *accidentally releasing them is one thing, intentionally releasing them is my concern*

When my male coturnix flew away, I knew he was going to get killed, I was wrong though he survived the night and came back home. Accidents happen, and I was lucky he came back unscathed, others are unlucky and loose whole batches...kinda funny to think of (the thought of them running around gathering them up he he) though I wouldnt want that to be me. My GC would kick my butt, i'd probably get fined.

But people who release coturnix and human bred bobwhite birds to just let them go without shooting them down need

'ed lol THEY dont free range well....period.

Then again, I dont really believe that coturnix can hybridize with bobwhites---JMHO. They aren't releated......someone would have to do some sort of genetic blood testing for me to believe it.

However, i'd hate for others to loose thier human bred variants of bobwhites if in the future unnatural/wild bobwhites start breeding with wild populations causing there to be spots of un-native strains.


I wanted to edit this to add (so no one gets offended by this who releases) that bobwhites that are legally allowed to be released in areas where they are monitored by their game wardens is fine IMO. What bugs me is the ones that arent native being tossed out just cuz. Then again Pheasants arent native here...that I will never understand...but even then you need allowance to release them in most places.

I respect everyones opinion.. that is why I asked the question. I am not dead set on turning them out.. I in my mind thought they might stay w/my chickens and around my barn. ***

monarc23, I was not offended... by you or anyone that had a comment. Yes, as you mentioned, I was only asking questions.
So now I need to figure out how to keep them in a pen or how to protect them. Now, I will be looking to see how everyone does that.

My coturnix are in a main rabbit hutch (large) and then i have small 2x2ft compartments that I have small groups in.
