Im new to this site but I guess I still have my opinion. I personally have let mine go and they survived. My thoughts are that it is not cruel. I wouldnt let them go this time of year but when everything greeens up again and the bugs are abundant I dont see a problem with releasing some. Yes, if you read about it a small percentage actually survive but that's really the reason I started rasing quail. As a child (Im 33 now) we would see quail all the time on our farm but we havent seen them in at least the last 10 years. I usually raise 5-10 thousand a year, selling most to hunting preserves and local folks. We have seen them around lately so I know some have made it.
