Raising chickens in Nassau county, Long Island

Hi everyone, just joined BYC and am having trouble finding some much needed info. I have been thinking about raising some chickens for quite a while but want to find out if I can legally have them in my backyard before going through all the trouble and expense. Can anyone tell me who I would contact to find this out? Much appreciated.
