Raising Chickens in the North

Hi,

I live in SE AK but there are times it gets cold here too (hey, NP & Salcha, quit laughing), I used this site: http://www.ithaca.edu/staff/jhenderson/chooks/chooks.html to get the breeds of chickens I wanted. Friendly, can stand confinement and WINTER HARDY- check it out.

Hi gardenak,

I am not laughing. Cold is a relative thing and you have to deal with much more than just the cold with the wind, rain and damp. Here it is still comfortable at 20 degrees below where you are probably FYAO at 10 above.

Thanks for the site info.

I live in Florida so I don't have that problem but my brother lives in northern Michigan. His birds do fine. They live in the barn and lay their eggs in the hay. If the eggs freeze no problem just let them thaw out and use them. They do usually crack when they freeze.

Here is a picture of some of his birds.
