Raising Chickens on a Roof!

Um, sorry, pigeons etc do not spend their days standing in the middle of city rooftops.

How many of y'all who don't think roofs get hot are a) roofers or b) have BEEN on a city roof in the summer (or for that matter even just had an office or apartment window overlooking one)?

Didn't mean to ruffle your feathers, Pat..

For what it's worth, I've been on a city roof during the summer, and I know it gets hot. I actually toss my garden hose up on the west-facing part of my home's roof during the winter, so it won't freeze up.. Works great if there's any sun at all.

Still, I think raising chickens on a roof would be manageable so long as the OP included shade in their run area and plenty of ventilation in the coop. At that point, it really shouldn't be much different from having chickens on the ground.

After all, even bare dirt in full sun gets pretty hot on a summer day.

Wow! I have been on some beautiful rooftop gardens, not asphalt/ cedar shingled, but actual rooftops where people are supposed to spend their time as well. I think that is such a fabulous idea! Talk about reducing workplace stress. My last workplace had a gorgeous rooftop garden/break area and I would have absolutely loved to see chickens there. I can't think of any reason not to do it if it is a suitable place for people to be. Good luck!
