Hey gang
I am currently raising 14 cornish x meat birds. They are about 1.5 weeks old now. I have a 6x10 chain link dog pen that will be their home here shortly. Currently in a cattle trough inside at night inside my porch and when I am working, then in the pen the bulk of the day.
I have a large concrete slab in the back that would be a perfect place to put the pen(right now its movable until I finish putting a roof on it)
Would it be ok to leave them on concrete? I have laying hens in a regular coop with a dirt run. Since the meaties will only be out there 6 weeks max, wondering if it would be ok to put them there. Seems I could keep it cleaner and not destroy any more of the yard

I like raising my meaties on concrete because it's easy to clean and disinfect between groups of birds. I'm actually pouring a slab right now and asked the contractor to finish the surface as slick as possible so it'll be easier to wash. I normally put a thin layer of rice hulls down first which helps in the absorption and collection of their droppings.

I've also found that the birds prefer the concrete because it seems to be cooler for them than bare ground.

I went ahead and moved the kennel over there a minute ago on the slab. I think this will work out good. I can gather neighbors bags of leaves and spread them out every few days in the pen. Then add them to my compost bin

The only downside I could see would be putting really young birds on concrete when nighttime temps were chilly. Beyond that, for me, concrete is the way to go and I've now moved over 2,000 meaties through my place.
