Raising feeder insects

Well, found out they really liked the alvocados. They are still having a field day with the fruits and veggies, but almost completely ignoring the kitten food. I tried tricking them today I mixed chick start w/ corn and oats and bannanas, moistened it w/ water, pasty not soupy, so we'll see how that goes.

I ordered small, medium and large mealworms via Grubco; the end of last week. 1000, 5000 & 1000, respectively. Hopefully that is enough to really kickstart some colonies

I purchased extra of the mediums primarily to help my baby chicks get through this coming Winter. Here's to hoping it helps them feather out faster.

Just saw the funniest thing, was putting some fresh treat in the colony (trying to find a term that is more soothing to my not quite on board husband) anyway I have had crushed up kitten food in there that I was sure they were completely ignoring, well there was this young one that was dragging this not quite crushed piece of whole cat food from the dish to the bedding area, was so funny b/c the food was as big as it was!!!!

Aren't they amusing, in a way? I sat down and just watched my colony snack on some bananas for a few hours today. I would avoid avocado all together, if the roaches it eat your chickens will too, and thosr fruit can be deadly to birds in some cases. Bananas are a favorite, along with whole grain bread. Once your colony is larger a lot of neat behaviors can be seen, like mating, males fighting, courting, and the females airing out their oothecae. If your lucky you can see the birthing process, I've only seen it around 7 times.

I never thought reading about roaches would be so interesting. We were thinking about keeping mealworms in the future. Hmmm.

I have a couple of pear trees and I throw juicy sliced pears in the chicken run. I figure they get more bugs when I do that. I don't think there is any way Mrs Delmar would allow me to raise roaches on purpose!

I'm planning to raise mealworms too. I just bought some from a pet store last night to get started. I got some regular size, and some giant size. Not sure which I'll go with yet.
