Raising feeder insects

I got mine from the roach guy, well packed and they weren't stingy, I got the assorted ages w/ one adult pair and was expecting mostly very young babies, but I got a good assortment of some older almost full grown babies. I was very happy w/ them, will order from them again when I need new genetics. (He renews his genetics every year)

I split off one of my colonies several months ago, about 600. Since then they have reproduced to over 4,000. I got so many I wish I could sell them, but that's not an option where I live. (Keep in mind if you live in Florida you can't have dubias shipped too you) I harvest several dozen males to feed to the birds at least once a week (The lizards get 'em everyday) I typically leave the females and nymphs alone, one male can fertilize up to 10 females, so the ratio should be 1/10.

I'm waiting for my tipping point when my colony is big enough to feed my girls and sell a few. How big is your container that holds 4000? How do you figure out how many you have? How many can you feed out a day at the 4000 size w/o comprimising the colony?

You can't ship them OUT living in Fl?

Well at least I know what I can do with the giant Dubia Colony that my Satanic Leaftail Geckos cant keep up with. I've always had good luck with the roach ranch, shipping and pricing. Unfortunately my roaches eat better than some people, my geckos are fat and happy because of it.

Tried carrots on the colony today, they LOVED the carrots. I took a small carrot and cut it in half lengthwise and I swear two of the larger ones were playing tug of war w/ it!

Okay any of you experienced roach people, How do I know when my roach house is over crowded? How do I estimate an approximate amount of insects in the colony? I have 8 egg flat type cartons in my tank and when I move them to look they are all covered w/ dubia's? Is there some formula or idea of how many you can feed out per day w/o comprimising your colony?

My colony has a red light for heat on 24/7 and has no outside clues as to day or night, yet they are 10 x's more active at night then day. That just amazes me how they seem to know w/o any outside clues.

Oh and I am still wanting answers to my other questions if anyone knows, thanks.
