Raising Guinea Fowl 101

Anyone raise them for the meat? I am considering it for next spring.

There are people who raise guineas for their meat. They are absolutely delicious.

Those who are really into raising guineas for their meat typically want to raise the Jumbo/French Pearl guineas since they are larger than the standard guineas. The guineas that I butchered this spring averaged 2 1/2 pounds dressed weight for yearling Lavender guinea males.

Good luck.

I found one of my guineas with a toenail that has broken off or got caught in something. Anyway it is far back enough it is bleeding. I washed it and it doesn't look like it has caused a direct injury to the toe or foot. I'm not sure what to do if anything. It is still bleeding, she doesn't seem bothered by it. Is there anything I need to watch for or do?

Just clean it the best you can, get some septic powder or corn starch and put it n it to help it clot up if that doesnt work add direct pressure until bleeding stops. Your Guinea will be ok missing a nail or even a toe, just make sure it doesnt get infected.

LTN Update!

My guineas have outed themselves as one male and one female! I'm so excited we might have keets in the future. Since silkies are such good moms, I'm wondering if I should put their eggs under a broody silkie in the future. Does that work out?

This is all conjecture. I'm assuming I don't lose the guineas to the trees. So far they like to stay with the chickens.

Also, I think their coloring is pretty unique. They have some chocolate feathers, some white, and they look lavender or purple around the neck. Kind of crazy! ETA: Make that violet! But they def have brown and white on them, too. I'll try to get a pic at some point. They are not very photogenic so far.

its called styptic powder or you can get in a kinda crayon.... good to have any time you clip nails. causes anti coagulation in bleeding... also in a pinch flour will work... someone probly beat me to this tho. Good luck.

I prefer to brood mine under a bantam, or incubate for sure, Thats just awesome for you!! Mine didn;t do well hatching their own, and I lost a month of laying letting them do it. I blame the ducks for raiding the nests.. but can't risk it again.

Or just go to the spice isle of the grocery store and get a jar of alum power, easier to dust or dip the birds foot with powder vs dabbing it with a 'pencil'...

Good post, yep, very true.
