Raising Guinea Fowl 101

I posted a new thread on my keet that had his middle toe ripped off by a raccoon but noone advised. Its the first knuckle. I was treating him with a cocktail of topical antibiotics and disinfectants. On the 3rd day he flew the coop and so I caught him and returned him to his flock as the seperation was counter productive. His toe is much better but is not entirely well. Im wondering if anyone has ever had 100% success in treating anything like this. He eats. Poops. Sleeps. Perches. Gets around in a cautious manner but seems to be adjusting to his new limitation. Im just wondering how others have treated similar problems. Even though his toe is not broken I may splint and wrap it just so he can get some pressure off it. Any ideas?

I had a adult male Guinea who lost his toenail and part of his toe this spring. I'm Not sure how it happened, but he is doing fine now. I initially caught him and cleaned it up and applied styptic cream to stop the bleeding. Once the bleeding stopped, I put some antibiotic cream on it but didn't wrap it. Because it was evening when I did this, I just put him back in the coop and let him roost normally for the night. The next day, I let him out to free range. He favored it for a few days then seemed to be back to normal after that (I did keep an eye on it but did not intervene further since it did not look infected and he seemed to heal on his own. I would continue to keep an eye on it and doctor it further if it seems to be getting worse. It sounds like he is on the mend, though, if he is acting normally and walking on it.
As a side note, I've also have a hen that broke her foot when she was young. It took her awhile to overcome her disability. But now, she is 2 years old and although she walks funny (she walks on her legs more than her feet), she keeps up with the others and does just fine.

I had a female get her leg removed up to the hip socket by a raccoon.... I put her in a hospital cage with her own food and water... There was no blood... I figured she would make it or she wouldnt but me trying to "tend" her would cause too much stress. Miss Peggy lived a year with the flock.... and she could perch up with the rest though she prefered her saw horse..

I lost her when she got caught between the chainlink and some plastic hardware cloth I had up for when they were keets.

I just picked more Keets out of the hatcher..

My total Guineas now is:

54 hatched today..
21 last week and with broodies
11 free ranging
1 in prison for life..

87... total if I get 13 over night I hit 100..

I think I have a good 20 pipped ....so I might make it..

My DW....the WWD says at 100 I get a 72 hour stay in a luxury suite with Butlers in white coats and some good drugs...

Are you planning on keeping all of those keets or do you sell them? Just curious.....that is a lot of Guineas! They will all eventually become criminal masterminds if your other Guineas corrupt them! Or are you just planning your own Guinea reality tv show?
After reading the posts I would soo watch the reality show!! :gig

They would probably even give you a nice jacket to wear......one with really long arms that fasten in the back!

Poor thing. So sorry for your loss. Im glad she got a year in though. I'm sure she was too.

I have ceased treatment since his toe cleaned up. I made a treatment plan but day 5 was a failure. Today with all the rain it looked swollen so I will spray down with saline tomorrow and put some antibiotic ointment on it topped with corona. I love the corona. It has the lanolin in it so its thick and although it gets gunked up with dirt like glue on the outside, it keeps the wound sealed on the inside. It also draws out infection. Stuff is amazing. Glad I stumbled upon it. I gave him spinach today and egg yesterday to supplement his diet and promote healing. It will be a week and after that I feel I have done all I could.

I had 2 problem babies, well birth defect then the one getting his toe pulled off. One born with an eye deformity. His eye is gone now. I actually believe the saline rinse did more harm than good. After a week I ended his gentler eye rinse treatment and he is doing surprisingly well. By far a little miracle. He got egg yesterday and spinach today and popped out another inch. Want to find an old hen for him, keep him close to home and always have a protective pal to get along with.

Oddly enough the 2 birds I treated have developed a curiosity with me. They dont want to be bothered no doubt and yet when I must they have adjusted and are more calm than the others. I find it a bit unusual how the young keets are a bit on the friendly side. I imagine once they are put outside it will all change.

My Guineas are not "BAD" enough to do the reality show, as I have the reformed strain of Guinea fowl. Plus, I don't have a large enough flock. But I do have all sorts of ideas for reality shows. I think I posted a few before (Monster Quest: The Hell Hen; When Your Fowl Runs Afoul Of The Law, etc) but I have many more: Deadliest Hatch (like Deadliest Catch); The Real Househens of Minnesota (like Real Housewives, but in honor of DR's criminal gang of Guineas); From Keets to Killers; Guinea Gangsta' Gangs (you could call it Triple G). I could go on but I will stop so I spare you from having to hear my crazy Guinea thoughts!
