Raising Guinea Fowl 101

I've been told that white flight feathers are an indication that they have a little bit of the Pied trait floating around in their genetic make up and that the amount of Pied/white flight feathers will increase in the future breedings of their offspring that have white flight feathers.

While I do have adults with white flight feathers that produced the occasional keet or 2 with white flight feathers, I have not proven the part about the amount of white increasing with future breedings of the offspring, because I usually sell off all of my keets, and the keets with white flight feathers are usually the ones that people will pick out to buy first!

White flight feathers on any color bird (except white obviously) are considered a flaw, and a disqualification for showing, according to the established "Guinea Standards". I don't show my birds tho, so they don't bother me, lol.

I've had white feathers for years, no signs of pieds. What has shown up though are opalines. I attribute those to the white flight feathered birds.

Will guineas protect my flock?

- I have never had Guineas but one man once told me that one day while out checking on his Guineas, he saw a large Mink dart out from around the corner of his barn, instantly 12 Guinea males attacked and killed it. As soon as they were sure it was dead, they called in the females for a Mink lunch.

I personally have had my whole flock of 5 Guineas escort a coyote off the property..... Honking and pecking him along.... He kept looking over his shoulder as if to say.... "This Aint Right..."

Interesting, I've never heard of the white flight feathers being related to anything more than a small amount of the Pied trait being carried by that specific Guinea. When you have time, explain in further detail, please

Can't explain it. I raise Lavender Guineas, no other colors. But my first opaline I know came from a female that had the white flight feathers. I still have them show up from time to time.
