Raising Guinea Fowl 101

Can anyone tell me if this is a male or female? Or anything else about it (I have figured out its a white guinea) It just showed up outside our chicken coop today and seems to have made itself at home.

Only way to tell is by listeneing to them. If its pretty quiet does some buzzing and squeeky gate noises and some alarm noises... most likely a boy. If it also does a noise that sounds like Buck Wheat.... over and over and over and over again.... Its a female.

Welcome to BYC.

Lock up your valuables, protect your animals, do not trust a Guinea that just shows up at your door. It is up to no good.

Count your fingers after you feed it, make sure you still have them all. Do not believe a word it says.

Perchiegirl the video explaining the sounds of a male and female guinea is right on. I have one squeaky gate and one buck wheater. I can't believe we guessed right when we named them at 3 days old. Thanks for the posting the video.

Thanks for the information everyone. From the description and the video, I'm pretty sure it's a boy. We've just recently stopped free ranging our chickens because of a predator, and I've noticed an increase in our bug population. Hopefully, this guy will hang around and help with that.

He should do that, you may have to get him some friends.

I am guessing he is a disposed leader of a flock in your area, Or Someone tried to bring in a single adult or a adult flock to their place and they refused to stay. the rest of the flock was either lost or killed.

A single guinea is rare, they are flock/gangland style criminals. I am guessing he wants in with your chickens and will most likely do fine with them.

What Ralphie said He needs a Motly crew..... LOL. another reason he might be at your door could be he lost his mate while she was nesting.

As of today 12 out of 13 of my Guineas are back on tick patrol and free from breeding duty.

The 13th has been transferred to the her maximum security summer wing cell block. She will return to the breeding pen in February, unless she is a dinner guest prior to that date.

'When you figure this out let me know too. Guineas live to be stressed. They are the drama queen gangsters of the bird world...not to mention secret society assassins..
It just takes time they will never be relaxed or tamed but they will start to calm down a little more just give it time
