Raising Guinea Fowl 101

Does anyone have any opinions on keeping a pheasant with guineafowl? Do they get along etc and are there any diseases that I should be worried about the guineas getting from the pheasant

The first thing you need to do is check your state laws concerning having pheasants. In my state, a permit from the G&F is required to have any type of pheasant. The permit has to be acquired before any pheasants are obtained. One step in getting a pheasant permit here is that the property and housing has to pass the G&F inspection. Part of that requires that where they are to be kept must be escape proof. That includes a run/flight pen that is covered by netting to prevent escape by flight and wire buried in the ground to prevent digging out.

This type of set up is not required for guineas but might not be a bad idea. When I had pheasants, I kept them separated from the chickens and turkeys (didn't have guineas at the time).

I suspect that if kept in the proper quantities with lots of personal space that the guineas would keep to themselves as would the pheasants. If kept in cramped quarters as so many people seem to try, I don't think it would go well with either species.

I bought my mob of Keets from her.... First time mail order for the both of us.... She is awesome... but I havent seen her online in quite some time. I think shes raising Peafowl now.

She recommended medicated to me as well. but like you couldnt find it. and like you my environment is pretty sterile with regard to poultry. Never had a case of Coccidosis with the chickens ever.... A round of mites yes... but that was all.

you can buy Amprilorium which is marketed under Corid

Here is the drug info

Like I said I dont medicate just off hand.... Just because.... but I will medicate if its necessary.

too much chance of aiding in creating drug resistant bacteria or parasites

Its happening with us humans too.

I have no idea if they can be safely raised together. BUT if you are raising ring neck pheasants expect the guineas to steal every ring off every pheasant!

@PeepsCA is the guinea expert. She recommends using a medicated high protein (28 - 30% protein) turkey gamebird feed. The medicated part is Amprolium. Amprolium is good for preventing deaths by coccidiosis. I do not know where she was buying her feed but medicated high protein feed is available just is not commonly carried in most places. I assume that she had a coccidiosis problem thus the need for a medicated feed.

Most high protein feed is not medicated. I use a quality non-medicated 28% protein turkey gamebird starter for my poults and keets and yes even chicks if they are in with the poults or keets. On a rare occasion I will lose a little one to coccidiosis but it is less than 1% of the poultry that I start. I don't feel the need to use a medicated feed for that low of a coccidiosis problem.

Good luck.

That is exactly how I feel too. However, even though I do not feed meds I keep water soluble stuff on hand just incase. So far (knocking on wood) I have not had a cocci problem.

I started out with medicated starter and then moved to a non-medicated crumble. It was what was suggested by most of the locals, so I followed suit. We haven't had any medical issues with our chicks or our keets. .....

I found if you can sell them processed as chemical free ( no drugs or meds ) you can get a higher price and sell them faster too.

Thank you!! We live 3 miles from the Fort Dix McQuire AFX Mega Base. You feel as though you can touch the belly of the huuuuumongous carrier planes as they pass over my yard! We started with a couple cats, then a dog and then the guineas and chickens. The cats & dog helped a little, but the guineas and chickens really helped the most. Hubby rarely leaves the safe confines of our home, but with the birds, he's out tending to them daily and sometimes we get to go out and eat or something like that! For us, that's a biiig deal.
