Raising our 1st set of CX meaties

A life changing moment, Bee.

Literally.

Really?? I'm humbled that you think so!

That's a shame...the combination of the FF and the deep litter makes for an aroma free coop. I got those slow growers too but I got them in the early spring, so was able to put them out on forage at 2 wks and then there was no getting them back after that...you couldn't have made them stay in that coop.

I've never done meaties in the fall but it would seem that slow growth, heated floors and indoors living would stack against a person anyway for smelly coops and such....did you have to have them in the fall for your customers?

I don't raise them for customers, like I said earlier it would be too cost prohibitive, because I would include my time into the cost. I raise them for myself and my grandma. I am waiting for my next batch to get a ship date from the hatchery... ho hum... at least they are cute for a week or two.

I guess I should quit complaining about my slow growers so much... at least I only paid a quarter each for them.

I wish I could remember what hatchery I saw the Cornish cross, straight run chicks for 29.00/100... I would love to split with someone(or someoneS) at that price just to see how they turned out.

I think they are cute all the way through!

They are sweet and moochy...the sweetest chickens I've ever had. One jumped up on the seat of the picnic table to sit between my mother and I, settled down like she was just going to gossip awhile with the old hens...let me pet her and she just sat there a bit.

I really like the CX..the best foragers I've ever had, the sweetest birds and easy to manage.

I'm getting a small batch of 10 or so this spring from TSC...gonna pay their big prices but that's okay, they have a bigger bird.

I should stop complaining about mine. Put a few cent more for mine as well. :/

:lau true...I have an email about their flocks testing but didn't have contact info. Maybe the sale was for the Runts or whoopsies lol
Definitely not like my last 2 batches on growth. We'll see how they do at the end lol
NEVER AGAIN!!! I see why they were so cheap. I'm still tempted to call that farm and see what kinda birds they have hatching over there cause it sho ain't MEAT BIRDS. Maybe meatless birds. :gig

We'll see...I may still complain a bit (only here and to hubby tho lol) if they don't catch up soon, I will be watching closely on cost to raise vs meat...so I know whether that deal was a deal and to order again or ends up evening out. Still have hope, but want some weight.

Same here...I got mine for $1.20 or so per chick but was not pleased with the product.  I'll not fall for that again.

Maybe getting them so cheap will allow us not to have spent so much on feed and time, meaning at the end of it all, the cost will not be like those $29.00 birds. You think?

I definitely got some runts, whoopsies and some "what is this" chicks. My poor little runts just let the others run over them to eat and wait on the side until everyone is done. I think I will separate the runts and put them in a brooder by themselves. I'm thinking I may not ever process them. They are just too small. They are the same size and weight as the average chick. I think they are killing themselves because they are not meat birds and they are trying to keep up with the amount of food the other chicks are trying to eat and it's making them sick. They don't look good.

I separated 12 large last week because one cut open the side of a lil one over food. Today I studied the group for a few and I have ANOTHER 10 that are like regular week old layer chicks that have feathers growing the wrong way or not at all and the rest look like 3 week old CX :/ aren't these 6 week olds?

We are placin an order next week for 50 CX. I bet that order BEATS this order!
