Raising Quail in Southern California

Hello Everyone! A newbie here. I've been looking into getting some bob white quail.

Question on brooding day old bob white chicks:

We are planning for a real hot summer out here in Southern California.

If the temps during the day are in the 90's Fahrenheit do i need to run a heat lamp during the day for day old chicks?
(or just as needed to maintain the temp?)

I was wondering how this would work out being that during the day it is already so hot out here?

Might i need to run fan or a/c if the temps hit 100?

You need to watch the chicks very close for the first week
They will show you if is too hot or if is tooo cold

As you may know


If birds are under the light this means is too cold

if they are way far from the light is too hot

Bobs are not cold hardy birds they like warm


where are you located in south california


I know a place here in SC where you can buy some bobs aduts and youngs

maybe this will save you some headaches.

Dude, I've lived in southern Cali- it does not get hot there lol. I grew up in and currently live in southern Mississippi. They make it just fine here, so I'm sure they'll be alright there.

i lived in san diego and raising quails. i keep my chicks in the garage and used a 75w light bulb for heat. check the temp in the brooder, make sure your temp is between 80-95 degree for the first 2 weeks. even with san diego summer if you keep your window or garage door open, the tempeture don't reach over 100 degree. if your garage's tempeture already reach 90 degree then you don't heat no heat lamp.

I wasn't sure how hot was hot for them cause from what I have read on here it sounds like chicks are SUPER sensitive to the elements....​
