Ramps up to roosts?

I've looked at what seems like hundreds of coop designs and in some there are ramps up to the roosts, do I need ramps? I thought chickens would be able to get up there themselves.

My current chicken choices are: buff orpingtons, buckeyes, a guinea fowl, and one or two bantams for the kids.

Much depends on the size of your coop and how high up the roost is. Example: my new coop is 8 ft x10 ft. were about 12 to 18 birds will call home. The roost is 40 inches high. The birds have plenty of room to fly up and down so no ladder is needed. If that coop was 6 ft. x 3 ft. and roost was same height, they would need a ladder if roost ran the long way , as the wall would only be about 2 ft from the roost. Thus not alot of room to fly up and down.

Hope this made some sense.
