(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I am not new to chickens. I joined BYC back in 2012 when I started raising my own chickens. I previously had family chickens as a young girl. As of May 2012, I have had anywhere from 1-22 chickens free ranging in my yard.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? Currently, I have a 2-year-old hen, Caramel, and 12 chicks that are 6 weeks old.
(3) What breeds do you have? Caramel is an Easter Egger (sold to us as an Americauna
). The chicks consist of 1 Frizzled Bantam, 6 Isa Browns, and 6 more Easter Eggers, I believe.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? The fresh eggs are my favorite aspect of raising chickens. I will say that I enjoy watching and spending time with them. My chickens are pretty spoiled.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Reading, camping (though I don't go often enough), and just hanging out with my family. Baking is something I enjoy too. If viIm not at work I'm usually involved in church ministries.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I am happily married and have three (for the next week) teenagers in the house. My oldest son will be 20 soon. My two youngest are both 13 (not twins). We fostered and adopted. My hubby and I are both educators and have been for almost 24 years.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I joined the BYC community in 2012 when I first started raising chickens. Over the years I checked in but haven't posted since we've had a very busy run with fostering, adopting, and getting two of us through Grad school, raising our family, and just life in general. I'm back, as I dig in again with a new batch of chicks and a little more time on hands at home. Teenagers are way more self-sufficient!
