It was 8PM last night when the thought struck me. I was thinking of all the frostbite that can affect chickens, then I thought of it.

I call it the thermal roost.

Take a roosting stick, like a 1x1 inch plywood rod, but cover it in thermal heating then in cover/lining to prevent overheating. Think of those reptile heating pads you see at the pet store, but imagine instead of a pad, its a roost for birds.

The idea is that it keeps the chickens warm no matter the weather. I know its a weird thought, but I might consider it someday if I dont own silkies. Would you guys try this?

After some research, it seems like this idea was already thought of : ( womp womp

I personally would just make sure I had enough ventilation and insulation in the coop so there isn’t humidity or drafts that can cause frostbite. It’sa cool idea though.
