Every day at about the same time, I let my girls out into a small grass pen for about 30 minutes while I sit with them. Today, ten minutes after going out, one of them suddenly started sitting almost vertical and making a weird “bop” noise and straining a bit.
I thought “sh*t she’s egg bound” - I’ve only seen pictures and didn’t realize it happened so suddenly, but Ok. turned around to find a treat to get them back inside the run so I could tend to her.
While grabbing mealworms, I’m thinking “bath, epsom, where are my calcium tablets, I hope I don’t have to dig an egg out of there and it breaks”, etc. And then had pictures of prolapses and all sorts of worst case scenarios running through my mind.
I turn around to throw the worms in and ‘plop’ she lays an egg right in the sand of the run doorway. I guess she didn’t want to miss out on grass time? Chickens are so weird.
