What is the best subject you can use to get a thread to take off? I've seen some threads with over 5,000 replies. How do they do it?

It's often just luck. Just try to be as original as you can be. Also make sure you're passionate about the subject. Plus some of the best threads were improved once they were were Hi Jacked. For example Hatch Day was originally just SM updating us on her birds hatching. 34,000 posts later it's now a place many people go to to ask all of their hatching and duck related questions.

Yes. It's when the thread's original topic is changed to something completely different.

Yep! And Queen Em

Matthew's statement is really far off on several points. First, if you look at the threads that have the most replies, it is obvious that they also have had the most participants over time. certainly not five or so. Secondly, you can see that the topics are general and allow and encourage wide participation in topics that are, for the most part, non confrontational. Therefore more people are willing to participate without a fear of being challenged. Thirdly, the threads usually start as a pretty insignificant (and sometimes even foolish) premise and are allow to just free flow into a wide variety of topics that are usually not political or religious. So basically, most of the really big threads are just fee flowing and free wheeling and, for the most part are pretty funny. Lastly, and probably most importantly, these large threads are so general and free wheeling that you do not need to even know what came before. All you really need to do is begin your comment and become a part of the conversation that is then taking place. But like the weather in Maine don't rely on the topic to remain the same for too long, it will change on a dime.

Very well said.

And very true.. Anyone is welcome to join in any of the threads...If you post something and it's not commented on right away, give it a day. Sometimes people have to leave the forum or they are busy with another thread. We'll get to it!!

"They quickly go from productive threads then a group of select
four or five individuals make it their chat room."

I really hope no one feels that way. Crank up the keyboard and
post along with whatever thread catches your interest. Or read
along until you fill the urge to join in. You know, strangers are
only strangers until someone says hello.

So...Hello, everyone. Pull up a chair and post along with us.

A productive thread? It's all productive. Some threads really are
about chickens and give great advice. Other threads make you
think about something as you discuss different opinions.

Other threads maybe bring a laugh or a smile.

Now me personally, I don't know a whole lot about chickens.
That's why I came here in the first place. And I got some great
advice that really helped me out. And our opinions? We each have
our own and the moderators do a great job of keeping us in line.

But I hope that somewhere along the line, I've brought a few
smiles and maybe even a little laughter to the members here.

Spook...who loves being a member of this awesome site.
