We have 6 hens and one rooster. (Did have 2 roos but managed to rehome one)
My Hens have not started laying yet at 20 wks old. My rooster keeps trying to breed with the hens. He is also 20 wks. Is that even possible yet? I would think if they aren't laying yet that they aren't old enough to breed. Is he just "practicing" lol? If he does breed them, will their first eggs be fertilized? We really didn't want any roosters at all but out of or 2 speckled sussex chicks, they both turned out to be roosters. He is so gorgeous that we decided to keep him and see what happens but if he is going to be assaulting my girls all day long.. Maybe we should rethink that.

Young cockerels are generally extremely testosterone driven. Any eggs laid by your hens will most likely be fertile, but that will be no problem if they are collected daily so that none of the hens go broody and set on them. Most roosters calm down a bit as they mature.
