Make sure you ask for an address. If they give you a po box, number, say that you intend to pay in person, and need the street address. Then send letters to both addresses, disputing the debt and forbidding them from contacting you. If they call after havinf received that notice, they are breaking the law. Calling before or after certain times of the day are also illegal. Fines can get big and nasty, pretty rapidly.

Under NO circumstances should you EVER give them YOUR social security number or other information that should be private. You can ask THEM to give a partial (or full) ID number, and then respond that it does not match yours (if it does not), or proceed with identity theft reporting rpocedures if it does.

There is a family that is using my number as well...not sure if they once had it but I have had it for 10 yrs so i would think they didn't...anyways....credit folks call every once and awhile I give them all sorts of strange information...I have fun with it...if I am feeling annoyed I just hang up...back when I was in college we would pass the phone off to each other letting them go through their entire dialogue...it was great fun they wold eventually hang-up...also been known to just set the phone down and walk off...

We were bugged for months for another partys bills. One was for a repair on their boat, I said what do they owe, maybe I'll make the payment and pick up the boat. We finally dropped the land line and went cell. Another course is tell them to take you to court. It will get fixed quick or cost them even more money.
