Hmmm.

It seems that Tim is upset with people on the forums, moderators in particular, promoting the use of Sevin. I have't followed those threads but I would guess that moderators aren't the only people promoting its use.

He seems to take issue particularly with moderators. I've been here long enough, and it hasn't been that long, to realize that the moderators are like the rest of us. They all have different ways of doing raising chickens. When they post something in a thread as a member of BYC they are stating an opinion. When they post as a moderator, edit, remove, etc. they are acting as a moderator. When you are reading the threads it can be easy to get the two roles confused.

Rather than taking a shot at the "moderators" the post could have been worded differently; something along the lines of "there are people that seem to have much experience."

There is controversy in almost all aspects of raising chickens. Just look at the predator threads or what to feed my chickens.

Yes there are people that don't want to do the research and people that will believe the first thing they hear. It is pervasive in this electronic age. How many urban legends emails do you get forwarded to you? I think somewhere in the must read for new members there is a disclaimer about the information presented on the site. We have an individual responsibilty and have no cause to blame someone else for our poor judgement or laziness.

My parting thoughts for all of us. If we have a bone we just can't let go of maybe we need to take a time out for our own sake.

You need to think of the mods as first of all, traffic cops, who mostly move threads to where they should have been and try to make sure people are being respectful of one another. They are not chicken-raising encyclopedias. I know I am not. How many times have you seen me write, "This is what I do, but that's just me"? I continually tell people I do things a certain way, but it's not the only way and they have to make their own decisions. I am not a vet nor do I pretend to have a vet's knowledge, but I am always asked emergency and health questions like I am. I am just a member of the forum like everyone else and many here have had chickens much longer than I, so if someone thinks I have all the answers or do things the same way they do, they are sadly mistaken. That goes for using drugs, pesticides, culling birds, etc. Take everything with a grain or entire shaker of salt and look up information for yourself.

I totally agree with this statement.

Forums are places to collect ideas, information and different perspectives on any given subject so an individual can sift through them and make up their own minds, and to take it or leave it.

You are ultmately responsible for your own actions.

The concept that volunteer Mods should know everything there is to know on all subjects is ludicrous.

I think the fault for misinformation, lies in the reader and not the writer.

People should be responsible for researching information before applying it to their animals.

What people type and respond, is completely up to them and their personal experience. Just as it is completely up to the reader to take the information and double check it before putting it to action. For anything.

I am new, but I agree with this. But I also WANT to thank someone if they have given me advice! Advice is just what it is... advice. It is not a command. And if someone takes the time to give you advice, you should thank them.

I'm confused...you DO care or you DON'T care?

Advice is advice. Everytime someone posts 'I use sevin' someone on the 'anti-sevin' side of the fence inevitably chimes in with 'Its a deadly poison'

News flash... EVERYTHING we use to kill parasites in our chickens is a deadly poison, or it wouldn't be killing the parasites. Antibiotics are a deadly poison - to microbes. Sevin is a deadly poison - to mites, etc. Wormers are deadly poisions...to worms. Get my point?

It's all about judicious and educated use of everything.

While Mods are here to help keep the forum running smoothly, they are ALSO chicken keepers themselves, and share their experiences with various products, situations, etc just like the rest of us.

Personally, I don't give a post by a 'mod' any more weight than any other person on here. I know they aren't picked to be mods because they are necessarily the be-all , end-all experts, but because they are generally level-headed and diplomatic types who are willing to spend the time and energy to read the posts and keep the forum running smoothly. (and I thank them most sincerely for it!)

Just my 50c's worth...

Moderators on forums usually are more experienced than the average person for the topic they are moderating and their opinions and advice do carry more weight for people. That's one of the reasons they are usually chosen, along with having better than average mental health, a desire to help people and a willingness to donate their precious personal time to a job that is time consuming and often makes at least a few people mad.

This is a younger forum, with a lot of people that haven't had chickens a long time, including some of the mods. It's also a really busy forum and I can't believe how many new people, who often haven't read one word about chickens before they got here, show up. That's not a complaint, I'm glad they come, it's just a comment on how active this forum is! These days, a lot of forums don't even BOTHER to moderate. They aren't very nice places to go, either.

I think this forum is a real treasure and a huge amount of work for the mods. Even though some may have a little less experience in years, they seem to be very well read, intelligent and informed on on the topic of chickens.

On the topic of Sevin use, to me that comes down to a difference of opinion on whether a person chooses to raise their chickens organically or not. A brand new person that is organic, told to coat their chicken in pesticide, is not going to just go out and do it! They're going to ask for organic alternatives. A non-organic person won't care. I think it's good to give people alternatives and I think the organic people on the forum do a good job of doing that, as well as bringing up the risks associated with pesticide use.

I know that I do a lot of things differently than other people do them, for a variety of reasons. Sometimes people agree with me, sometimes they don't, but I like it that we are all free to choose between all the different options presented here.

It will be a miracle if this thread isn't locked by the time I get done typing and spell checking this!

I think that Nifty and the mods are perpetuating a conspiracy (BYC) to brainwash us into overpopulating the planet with chickens because they've developed a fowl cerebral control mechanism that when the time is right, will activate, and then they will be the masters of a supreme killing hoard of birds that will help them eventually take over the universe.

I still haven't figured out where the sevin comes into play but I'm working on cracking the code...

...my two cents...
