Timely Bump!
Saturday I had my flock out for some freeranging time since I was home.
They started making an awful racket & when I went out to see what was up there was a BIG Redtail sitting in the grass right in front of the open coop door. Sucker must have been 2' tall.
3 hens were inside the coop, the other 3 & the rooster were hunkered down in the mint bed - TG for invasive spearmint!
I have deer netting roofing the fenced run so when I'm not home and the hens are in, I don't worry.
It's worked for 3 Summers now {knock wood} to keep hawks out of the run.
But I like to let them get maximum freerange time on the weekends when I'm around and this migration is putting a big crimp in that idea.
Monday morning the hawk - same or another big one - flew overhead & landed on the electric pole where it sat for a while going NyahNyahNyah! to me.
Sigh...thanks to whoever postedthe link to IDing these raptors.
I now know Redtails are in my area year-round
Up till now I thought they migrated Southwards and I only had to worry in the Fall.
