I have to agree with cashdl, the Araucana's are about as unique as any poultry breed. Part of the rarity of the breed is the general difficulty in raising the ones that meet the standard for the breed so I think they will remain more rare than most breeds. I also feel they are worth the extra work but to me, that's the draw, the challenge and when you see improvement or a really great chick, it's the most exciting thing. This breed comes in both large fowl and bantam so you have choices.

Another breed that is fairly unique and rare is the American Serama. They are unique in that they are not as standardized in color as most breeds. They became APA and ABA approved just this year to give you an idea of the rarity. They are touted as the smallest breed of poultry and there are some micro's that are especially tiny but there are 3 size classes, A's, B's and C's and you can get all three classes in one hatching. The colors are mind boggling and other than APA and ABA shows, there are all Serama shows where anything goes as far as color, the type and size is more important. They are also shown differently than other breeds. For the APA and ABA, they are shown and judged as any other breed of poultry but there is also the table top judging where they are judged for presentation, type, personality etc. They are housepets in their home of origin (Malaysia) and they outnumber dogs and cats as pets so this breed is unusually tame and they make excellent pets. IF you are really into the rare breeds, there are classes of Serama that are more "extreme" in type that are closer to the original Serama in Malaysia that are super tiny and have extreme upright types that are stunning to me although I have also heard them called "freaks" because they are so upright with an S shape conformation. They are the most rare type of Serama and can actually be created through breeding.

You have several options with these 2 breeds. I love them both and enjoy each breed for their uniqueness.
