rat in feed

In the last couple of day I have had to fill feeder every day. It's a small feeder but I didn't think my 4 pullets can each so much in 1 day. Then yesterday, I saw what look likes a rat jumping across the grass beside a chicken. And in broad daylight too!!! Then it all made sense. The rat is getting into the feed.

So, how do I go about solving this problem? I thought of leaving rat poison out but afraid chicken and dogs might get into it. Same with a rat trap. Any suggestions?

You have to find a place where you can set the trap where the chickens can't get to it. If you've got rats, you will soon be losing more than bird food.
