Rat killed a full grown white guinea!

fancyfowlforever's story make my skin crawl.....that's like a horror movie.

: I have traps out all year long because the old saying is 'if you have chickens you'll have mice'.

I'm going to go to the farm store and buy a case of traps thank you very much!

Just a note to everyone who wants to use poison.....In the sick/injured/disease section of BYC there are owners whose chickens have gotten a hold of poison some way or another and are sick or dieing. Plus when the rats die from the poison dogs or cats can eat them and die also.

Just a thought.

I wouldn't have thought mice would go after chickens, ewww! (now I'm freaked.)
But the pail trick is one of my favorite ways to keep the rodents at bay. Use a small lid to float the bait, like from a peanut butter butter jar. This winter I didn't even need to use bait: I found a mouse had tried to get a drink from the chicken's water pail and drowned. I had a "mice cube".

I had mice nesting in our coop underneath the hay, stealing the feed but never harming the chickens. the mice would go and sit under a broody momma's wing in the winter to keep warm, and it always made us wonder why our chicks were squeaking. We got rid of them with a few very carefully placed mousetraps. Some of them were the real ones that actually kill the mouse (we put them in places that chickens wouldn't go, so they wouldn't injure themselves), but most were the kind that just close when an animal goes inside instead of killing it, just in case a chick decided it wanted to walk in. It is really awful that the rat did that, and I hope no more get in or get near your birds. I was always afraid this would happen with the mice in our coop. Ugh... rats.
