RAT POISON??

It has come to my attention that there is a infestation of rats as my neighbor leaves out bread for birds and plus thy eat some of my bird feed that is spilt by the chickens.
Although i try my best to pick up or cover any food that hasnt been eatin by my birds im sure i miss some.
So i wanted to know what is the best poison to get that will be effective as my hen is on eggs and the last thing i want is for the eggs or newly hatched chicks to be eaten or killed. As my hen is getting old and i want a daughter from her to carry her bloodline and legacy
Help will be appreciated a lot.
I have given them a form of poison where wheat seeds are covered with this red stuff (poison) but i doubt it is strong enough?

Tho I think poison is a risky venture because chickens and other pets might eat a poisoned rodents

Luckily for me the rats have chosen to go behind the coop and towards the bottom of my garden so i can place the poison without having to worry about any other animal eating the poison

once you have rats you will always have rats - they came from somewhere & when you kill those around your place others will move in to fill the void. Poison can be effective if its slow acting. Rats God bless 'em learn fast (that's why they are used in animal tests). If they see a buddy eat the poison & fall over dead - the rest of them will not eat the poison. Good slow acting poison will prevent this - but may take a few days to work.

Be careful - just because you place the poison where the dogs cant get it does not mean the rats wont move it. They like to take things home so its possible they can carry it into the yard & drop it for some reason. One of my dogs eats everything she can get her teeth on - Deer poop, bugs, seeds if she finds it she eats it - so I could never safely use poison myself.

By the way - cats are not a good deterrant for rats - good rats will eat a cat. Get a good rat terrier - they will kill rats by the bushel & have a great time doing it!

Your right as luckily i had spotted some of the poison had been moved ! So i wont be placing anymore down as i have a stag that is out in the open. I cant get a rat terrier as its going to be hard looking after a dog :-(

I HATE poison, too much collateral damage. As others have stated, very easy for it to get where you don't want it, and then the wrong things are dead.
