I'm so sorry about your bird

I hope he's going to be okay

FYI so this doesnt happen again, there are traps out there that are fully enclosed inside of a box - so that nothing can trigger them but whatever crawls inside of it.

A day has passed, and we have some good news. We're cautiously optimistic. It looks like it was a head injury after all. Although we seen a lot of progress, because of the nature of head injuries, we know we're nowhere near out of the woods, but the great news is that there was no broken neck or other catastrophic injury that could be observed by the initial examination. We are so incredibly relieved!

Also, it turns out it was Loretta, not Dolly, who got hit by the trap. Even though Dolly is a boy in Loretta is a girl, they still look fairly similar unless you see them side-by-side. Plus, she was holding herself in such a weird way it was even harder to know. However, when she walked out of the pet carrier today

, I could see quite clearly that it was Loretta. She's getting around pretty well, although I can see that she was dizzy and not very surefooted when she tried to hop up onto the bottom rung of the roost. Believe it or not, she actually laid an egg late this afternoon. That has to be a good sign.

We're going to put her back in the pet carrier tonight, because I don't want her climbing high on to the roost with her as dizzy as she is. So we're cautious, but we're in a much much better place than we were last night.

Thanks again to all of you for all the kind words, advice, and understanding.

That's great news. Sounds like she will be O.K in time. I wish Loretta a speedy recovery!

P.S. We would love to see a photo of her. What breed is she?

Loretta is a RIR. Here's a picture I took of her today:

She was running around like crazy, so it was hard to get a good shot.

Here's another one of her in the nest box:

She's another one on the right, and Butchie (the EE who lays the beautiful green eggs from the other thread) is another one on the left.
