Rats and Mint

I have tried rat poison before, not that one in particular, and it kills the rats but more come back and I am afraid if I keep using poison eventually my dogs will get sick if one if them bites a poisoned rat

I have read that moth balls helps keep rats away and a also a mix of boric acid and peanut butter, which they eat, will kill them. I am going to try both this week.
