Hardware Cloth is the only way to keep your coop rat free.
Ditto on the METAL garbage can to keep your feed in. I do the same. Rats can chew through plastic bins.
I lined my metal can with a plastic bag, cuz I had some condensation issues...the platic bag (well and changing the can location) took care of that.
If you've got rats---you should treat it as ALL OUT WAR. They can do more damage to chickens and chicks than most people are willing to admit. Trap, shoot, kill.....
