chicken wire is NOT enough. They can get into holes 1" in diameter and chew throw chicken wire......

Hardware Cloth is the only way to keep your coop rat free.


Ditto on the METAL garbage can to keep your feed in. I do the same. Rats can chew through plastic bins.

I lined my metal can with a plastic bag, cuz I had some condensation issues...the platic bag (well and changing the can location) took care of that.

If you've got rats---you should treat it as ALL OUT WAR. They can do more damage to chickens and chicks than most people are willing to admit. Trap, shoot, kill.....

my dad said that rats got to a brid at his work and full grown grackel(sp) i think. but it was a big bird....

Can a rat eat a full grown n alive chicken?
I have cabbage n pumpkin n some bread n oranges for my hens outside in their run which is open on top but enclosed all the way around.
