Killing rats is just going to exhaust you and, at the end of the day, accomplish nothing. You need to just make sure there is no food available for them. When you get that under control there will be no reason for rats to frequent the area and they will be gone.

I definitely agree that killing rats will do little to solve the problem, but would still recommend poison. Taking the food away is important, but will not necessarily drive them away. Rats can and will eat anything and everything. They can live on your attic or wall insulation. They can find food outside amongst the wild. In my experience, if you don't eradicate the rats they will eventually become a bigger problem than you can imagine.
