rats

Rats. The female has about 6 babies, they grow, and the females form a community. It may or may not include a male. They have extensive tunnel systems where each female can raise her young. So , you are not just dealing with 1 rat, it's usually a group.
Poison works best when there is no other food available. I have bait stations made out of rubbermaid storage containers turned upside down with entrance holes on each end, and the bait tied in the middle so they can't bring it out. I also put a rock on top to keep it from getting pushed over.
I'm in the process of rat proofing my runs, if there is such a thing. I have replaced all my wire with hardware cloth. I have also laid it on the ground nailed to the bottom of the coop and run and it extends 3 feet out. If I find a hole, I shove the hose down it, and let the water run for a long time.
Rats only live a year or two. But they have many babies in that short time.

There are actually two major types of rats, Norway rats, and Roof rats. The Roof rats are sometimes called tree rats. They climb well, and usually have their nests off the ground. The Norway rats burrow into the ground and, while they will climb, they don't climb nearly as well as roof rats. The two species do not get along well, and don't interbreed. Either species is very destructive, and they do billions of $ of damage each year.

I have a neighbor who has stacks of junk and lots of spoiled food around. His rats come over here, and I am giving them all the poison they want, but since he has mega sources of food for them, the poison thing isn't working well. Guess I'll have to get some traps.

Glad that I have never had to deal with rats here! A trail camera is something that usually hunters use to take pictures undetected by the animals. It can take pictures at night as well. They can be set to take pictures at certain intervals or when triggered by a motion detector.
