My hen is making a rattling noise and has been for a long time but she has no discharge, eats fine, drinks her water ok and otherwise is totally healthy. Any suggestions??

Hi and :welcome! I'm sorry you're having trouble with your hen. She does sound like one of my hens that had a cold or respiratory infection (not sure which, the hen died of other causes).

I asked a moderator to move your post to the emergency/disease forum as you'll likely get help faster over there :).

She doesn’t sound bad to me. Do you see any bubbles in either eye, nasal drainage, or any swelling around an eye? Does she sneeze?
No eye drainage and no swelling in her eyes. She does sneeze randomly but at least a few times a day. She’s about 6 and has stopped laying eggs for awhile now. She’s had a sneeze and raspy/rattle noise for a month or two now. Do you have an idea of what I should give her to help her?

Thank you so much! :)

I would just check her crop in the early morning to make sure that her crop is emptying normally, and that she is eating and drinking. Does she have good air circulation inside the coop? Does she still lay eggs? Do you have any pictures of her droppings?

Ok I’ll keep an eye on her crop but she is eating normally. I’ll try to grab a photo of her droppings tomorrow. They are pretty normal looking - sometimes watery though. The coop has one main window with hardware cloth type wiring on it for circulation. We use pine shavings but I’m wondering if I should switch the bedding?

Pine shavings are fine, and that what I have always used. If there is ever a strong odor of ammonia, be sure to stir, keep it dry and add new when needed. If her crop is ever full and puffy in early morning, they sometimes can have noisy breathing if some crop contents come back up into the throat.

Do you think I should give her antibiotics or is that not a good idea? Online it says Tylosin would be a good option but I’m hesitant if she doesn’t need it. She seems very perky otherwise and her eyes are clear and comb is red.
