Looks to me like they are a middle man who doesn't hatch their own birds but probably gets them from Cackle??

I couldn't tell if they were NPIP certified or not.

I personally would NOT go with a middle man... to much chance off Mareks or other things, but is there a reason why you don't just order from cackle or go to a farm store or feed store near you?

Hi There,

Thanks for your insight! I run a small backyard flock and technically do not meet the minimum requirements for NY State for the local Agway or feed store. (6 chicks minimum) I can order direct from Cackle or Meyer for instance but with small orders you run the risk that they throw in extra chicks or roosters for warmth. I cannot have a roo and since I am adding to an existing flock really wanted a max order of 4 chicks. Picking them up eliminates the extra chick possibility, you get to pick the one you want and the middle man eliminates chicks arriving DOA. On the flip side introducing a middle man increases costs, and allows opportunities for the chicks to pick up sickness from the cleanliness from the place or other birds that going direct eliminate. I am open to all options, but just trying to throw ideas out there.

Thanks!

I ordered twice from Meyer in July.
6 in the first order and 7 in the other.
They didn’t throw any extras in.
However, one of the three Australorps I ordered turned out to be a rooster.
I’m very satisfied with my birds from them.
Healthy and beautiful and no bullies.
Even the cockerel is sweet and unaggressive.
I did pay for the Mareks vaccination for all.
When you go on their website they will usually have an employee that will instant message you and you could tell them about your situation and how you can’t have roosters.
I think some breeds are easier to sex than others.

Meyers actually sent a heat pack with my order, that they didn't charge me for. No extra chicks and all were sexed correctly. Of all places I ordered from, on my terrible route... Meyers had the most amount of live chicks arrive. But yes, a couple had passed for me to deal with.

It might be possible to split the (political) 6 chick minimum for local sells with someone else who also doesn't need that many? 25 is often the hatchery's minimum for shipping. Sometimes it depends on your location and time of year weather wise.

It is nice to pick the ones you want! I couldn't identify any red flags on their site, other than not finding an NPIP # for them. And I'm not sure they made it clear they were a middle man or I just pulled that one from my hat. I try to avoid deception... but I'm not sure they did anything to make me think they were being misleading. It's nice that they are offering a service for people who may not want or be able to raise chicks past heat... or as you state, not need 6 birds. :)

I have spoken with them over facebook messenger.. they are very nice... they get their chicks from a private breeder in New Mexico and Cackle Hatchery... both are NPIP certified so they are the middleman. Would a middleman be NPIP certified? No correct?
