Not sure if I am posting this in the proper section or not, but it seemed like this is where this should go.

I ended up with a few too many roosters as many of us do. So I placed one on craigslist. I would prefer to not have him eaten, but I certainly won't put that as a restriction. Afterall, just because the kids and I have named him, doesn't mean someone else will. I get that. And as long as I don't have to eat a bird that I named....

Anyway, I've read on here multiple times to beware of folks trying to get roosters to use in illegal fighting. That I am against. Problem is, how does one know that the person wanting the rooster would be doing this? Are there any "tell tale" signs I should be looking for? I have listed him for $5. He is a "mutt" (although a really cute part silkie part barred rock mutt!) and is about 15 weeks.

I have someone who is interested in him, and is going to drive up from Mass (I'm in NH) over an hour away and keeps emailing me about him being "soooo cute" and "sooo adorable" .

I would like to think that she must really think he is just adorable (he is!) and is willing to drive that far for a $5 mutt rooster.

Am I just over-thinking this? I mean there are free roosters all over craigslist, so why would someone want my $5 one for fighting? Right? Just seems silly to me to drive an hour for a $5 mutt. I asked her what his home would be like and she said that she currently has 2 hens and is getting more and they have a coop placed inside a large dog run.

I am probably just paranoid!

Thoughts? It's completely ok to tell me I am paranoid...

If it's not a game breed itself then it would be useless for fighting against a real game. The typical rooster will run when it knows it has been whipped. No sport in that. Real pit games don't quit until they are dead, too disabled to carry on, or they have won.

I sell a lot of roosters of the dual-purpose and layer breeds. Wouldn't be worth a cent to a real cocker. But my ethnic market loves them. They all end up in someone's pot fairly quickly though some get resold before they meet their destiny.

You are being paranoid.

But dont sweat it! If he is not a game breed, no one will fight with him. He will be going to a good home.

Yeah for me being paranoid!!!!

See how much I know about fighting??? I had know idea only certain breeds were used. Glad he isn't a game bird! (I should know this as I have an OEGB and I did read that this is what they were originally bread for)

Thanks for making me feel better!

oh he really is cute with his little feathered feetsies! :) I don't ask a lot of questions either. Typically you find out more when they pick them up but sometimes you don't want to know. I'm almost certain that the last two I sold will be dinner but that's no skin of my nose. If I could have withstood those nasty little beasts until they were 20wks they would have been MY dinner. The hardest one to part with was the first.
