My roosters spurs

He is beautiful!
Unfortunately, my roosters (half-brothers) have spurs that point inward instead of to the back. When they get long, the spurs bang into each other and into their legs when they walkšŸ˜•
I didn't know it was common for roosters spurs to grow out the wrong way

We cut the end of our rooster's spurs using a dremel cutting wheel. I shine a flashlight through the spur and mark the end of the quick with a pencil so we don't cut into it. Dog nail clippers can also work, but Blue's spurs are too thick for those. My understanding is that twisting the spur cover off exposes the quick and is painful for a rooster for a few days - similar to ripping your fingernail down too far.
I put a flashlight on his spurs tonight and I cannot see his quick. It appears that they are hollow! I know this sounds ridiculous but I was able to see through all the way down to almost 1/4ā€.

Hi!
My rooster, Ricky’s spurs appear to be getting too long and I think they are bothering him. I’ve read a lot of different opinions on either clipping, dremeling or twisting it off. Can someone tell me the best recommendation? He is a little over 3 and my only rooster so this is a first for me! Thank you!!
Update: I was able to get almost an inch off with the Dremel cutting wheel and nail trimmer! He was great and sat through it without much of a fuss-thank you for everyone's advice and help!

Dremel is the way to go, good job!

Greetings Henniezues:
I haven’t posted in years, but this one caught my attention! I’m a home chicken guy for 30 years! I tried the twisting spurs off only once. One came off at the root, up next to the leg! That was my last attempt at that. The spur, is not hollow…it is horn, just like a goat. About half way or less down the length of the spur is blood supply, and therefore a mess! Please be kind and saw them shorter with a hacksaw, or dremel!

We have always used a hacksaw, twisting off sounds cruel.

Trim with dog nail clippers. that will leave them rough and splintered. Follow with a dremel type tool. we have a Sunbeam Lighted Nail Trimmer which is also handy for when beaks need a bit of work. Do Not Twist Them Off.
Blood and pain may follow. You don't want to leave them with a painful experience

Exactly, if they have a slightly annoying but otherwise uneventful nail trim they won't give you too much grief when you need to do it again. If you cause them a lot of pain they will be very uncooperative next time. That's why I won't let anyone else trim my animals' nails. I know I will be extra careful not to quick them but finding a good groomer can be a hassle and if in the meantime a bad groomer is rough and quicks them possibly multiple times I'll be left with an uncooperative animal in the meantime. Be as gentle as possible when trimming any animal's nails, their future cooperation depends on it!

He's a beauty! It can actually make them aggressive if the roosters perceives it as an act of aggression against him. Some people are scared of them so they cut them short with a Dremel tool
I trimmed my rooster with a dremel after bathing him. I was getting him ready for a show. He didn't seem to mind either the bath nor the spur trim. Mc is a White Faced Black Spanish and is quite the gentleman. H won a blue ribbon!!!!!!!!!!!!!
