I couldn't afford to feed a P-51 either, much less insure it.I knew a guy who owned a F4F Wildcat (WWII fighter).
He told me he used to have a P-51 Mustang but he couldn't afford the insurance. (Back in the 80's, when they were only about a $million.)![]()
Johnny Carson used to say that the definition of a boat is "a hole in the water you pour money into," but boats got nuthin' on airplanes. I used to own a small single that cost me the equivalent of four hours rental on a similar plane just to own. Not to fly it, just to own it.
But if I flew it, I had to pay the kitty so there'd be money in the bank for maintenance, TBOs and refurbishments. To break even compared to the cost of renting, I'd have had to fly it 11-12 hours every month. So if I didn't fly at least four hours a week, it would have been cheaper to rent.
And renting was far less stressful because my only financial risk started and ended when I handed the owner a check for the rental, and my worries about accidents, maintenance, and theft ended when I handed him back the keys.
Airplanes are funny critters.
