Hi everyone šŸ‘‹

I got my first rooster today from my neighbor (hatched as a chick and handled by the children) and I have a few questions about the spurs. As you can see in the photo below he doesn't need these done any time soon, but I feel like I need to prepare for when the time comes 🤣

How does everyone trip the spurs? I've seen methods with dog clippers and Baked potatoes. What does everyone recommend? Any advice would be greatly recommend šŸ“

We only have one old silkie mix rooster here that we have to take care of as his spurs grow inward.

Hubby used his Dremel until I bought a fingernail one. Chewy has one for dog nails that's probably better.

After years of this, we opted to take his spurs off, just the spurs, nothing painful. We felt this was needed as this old rooster had to walk bull-legged his whole life to avoid his spurs. Now he doesn't. It takes about eight months for them to grow back.

I only trim spurs when I see an actual need. That is really rare. The time that it is actually needed usually doesn't come.

I use a Dremel and the disc meant to cut metal. I don't remove the entire spur, just blunt them by cutting off the sharp tip.
