I introduced myself so long ago I think it's time to do it again. We have a small property here in Middle TN where we raise a flock of chickens. Along with the chickens we have one crazy dog, a billion birds living in the trees and a thriving garden (doing good this year!)

We began with a flock of six Leghorns. Since then, we've lost three. One to unknown causes and two others to a neighbors dog who got out. Then, we added our new ones to the flock. We have six again. I thought we had two Black Star hens and a Rhode Island Red hen. Over the last week or so, we've been wondering if my daughter's favorite was a boy or not. "She" was starting to get much bigger than the others and sort of running things around the coop. Then, I noticed her tail feathers were getting very pretty. You all have confirmed that "Butterscotch" the lap chicken is indeed a rooster.

Our chickens free range and go into the coop at night. During the day they run around the yard making noise and taunting the dog. Then the dog runs after them and they get mad at her and trot away making angry noises. Then the dog wonders why they ran away. If nothing else, it's entertaining keeping chickens!

Send a pic of butterscotch and we will see about your chicken.:)

Here is Butterscotch. Sorry about the funky angle but "she" doesn't like to look up when we're around. "She" always thinks we've got treats and starts to peck.

You can post the photos at "what breed or gender is this," to get more opinions. But it would be good to have a photo of bird facing front to show comb, and one of it standing naturally in side profile to show gender feathering

I did that. It was unanimous that "she" is a "he". I'll try to get "her" looking up tomorrow and see if I can't get a better shot.

I posted it in the "what gender is this" section too but someone asked for a better picture. Here it is. Right before it was taken, a rabbit was over by the chickens. Butterscotch ran after it with wings flapping and chased it off. I have never seen one of the hens do that. Even the older hens don't. They just run away making angry noises.
