So it was back in 2013 i got our first hens, and By gum what a learning curve we had.
Despite our best efforts all but one of our original hens got had by a mink :(

But we now are hatching our own little hens/roos.
We have just had one little one hatch upside down and seems to be a bit sleepy. shes a silkie x copper maran and although sleepy since being offered water every half hour or so shes perking up.
Just wondering how soon before i can expect her to be up and about, if picked up she cherps and is very lively but when put in the brooder she sleeps and very little else

Hi :welcome

Glad to have you back!! What an adorable chick you have there!! If she has just hatched she can survive for three days after hatch with out food and water due the the yolk she has absorbed prior to hatching. If she was a malpositioned chick this could have taken even more out of her during hatch as they have to work harder to hatch. Mine are usually in the incubator for at least 24 hours after hatch before being moved to the brooder. Once in the brooder I give them a few hours to settle in and get acclimatised before I start gently dipping beaks in the water and tapping the food to encourage them to start eating and drinking.
You could put some save a chick in their water this can give them a little energy boost especially if they have had a difficult hatch. Hatching is very hard work for them so quite a lot of sleeping can be expected just after hatch. I know mine are often like a little carpet of chicks fast asleep just after.

Wishing you the very best of luck of with her and good luck with the rest of your hatch :frow

Thankyou shes 24 hours old now, think i just needed reasurance as shes our first. :D thankyou so much.

Hello and welcome back!

Cute chick you have there, hope she perks up soon.

Hatching is very hard work for chicks - often they will fall asleep, eating , drinking etc. This is a good time to warn - use shallow water dishes and put clean pebbles or marbles in, so that chicks can't accidentally fall in head first and drown. It does happen. Good luck with your hatch.
