re-set a broody 3-28-09 with welsummer eggs due to hatch 4-18-09

My broody hen was due to hatch eggs 3- 27-09
She had had her eggs out from under her more then once.
I checked the eggs at day 18 and pulled out all the eggs but 5 that still looked to be ok.
I had hoped she would get the 5 to hatch.
The smell was horrible so I checked her eggs last night day 22
2 eggs was oozing and one was covered with very wet poop
no movement in the other 2 I just knew that the eggs were no good. Don't know if I should open them today or not.
So I'm going to see if she sets 21 more days she has fresh eggs
under her for try #2. She has 8 welsummer eggs if she stays set due to hatch 4-18-09

Posting an up date she has set the 2nd set and is due to hatch 4-18-09 2 more days .

I would honestly give her a while to rest,and regain her strength and put wieght back on, then if she goes broody again, or still is, I hope you have ALOT of food on hand, and make her eat often. making her set for 6 weeks straight can kill her if she continues to lose wieght.

She has food and water in front of her at all times if she breaks up that's ok. If she stays set that's up to her.
She has never been off feed she eats every day.
Well just have to wait and see what she decides to do.
No one is making her stay broody. Its all up to her.

Hiya okie, that is right, it is up to her. My hubby made a comment yesterday that he had to bring in our broody when the weather hit the other night, he said because you made her go broody. I told him I didnt make her do nothing. It is what she wanted to do.

Right you are. It`s up to her. Once had a Brazilian game hen that would hatch 3 clutches at a stretch presuming that I took the chicks, then she wanted to hatch rocks. Couldn`t give her a break. Another Spanish game hen would set for three months on nothing. It all depends on the hen. Another thing I don`t like is folks that jam food and water up close to the broody. They need to get off the nest and eliminate, eat, drink, exercize, dust bathe, whatever. Nature is smarter than we are.......Pop

Checked the old eggs all 5 were no good.
So its up to her now she has new eggs to try again.

she should stay on...... my friend had a broody that sat on nothing for literally YEARS brfore i gave her the idea of giving her fertile eggs, three weeks later her hard work was finally rewarded... and after 8 weeks of raising the chicks, she went right back to nest!

This hen is wonderful she has stayed set. I hope she is a great mom. After all the setting time she better be ,bless her heart.
