Here is a pic of my little Cayuga duck with a claw growing out of its head behind its topknot. I posted this past weekend and a fellow member told my that it could be a twin that did not develop. So I just want to share it with everyone. The little baby is doing fine.

That is so different. It will make it easy for him to scratch his head. : ) I wonder if you could amputate it????

I would bet almost anything that it has to do with the fact that he's crested. The crest on ducks is actually caused by a skull deformity, and sometimes there will be bits of fat and bone that protrude up into the crest, but you would never see them because they are inside the crest. Sometimes their skull doesn't even cover the part of their head where the crest is... it's just all fat and skin and feathers. I bet that little claw is just a random piece of bone sticking off his skull!

I think he'll probably be just fine, but once in a while crested ducks have neurological problems like poor balance, so you may want to keep an extra eye on him just in case.

oh dear you hit the nail on the head. When the little thing hatched it scared the biggibies out of me. My DH just laughed at me and said it is coming to get you. I looked at him like he had better find someting to do:hide.

The little toenail on the claw has grown some. He/she seems fine, running around with the other little ducks. I just hope I don't have another one. I'm still puzzled we it has a crest cayuga ducks don't have crest, but I they do now.
