What is that PVC pipe thing?

It's their water trough. I sit it on the floor when I have baby chicks, keeps everybody dry and the water clean.

Here's an update.
5 of the younger chickens refuse to go in the house at night since the shavings have been added. They has to be caught and put in by hand. The rest seem to like it just fine and the shavings have not been kicked off the shelves.
