Thank you for this other view. I’m not sure exactly what you are saying. Is it that the quality of the chickens is about the same but the price is higher? I do have time to learn as much as one can without actually having the chickens. As for liking the breed or not ... I’m not sure that will be an option for me, I’d just have to love the ones I have. LoL May I ask what hatchery you got your chickens from? I thinking they are probably not all the same, sounds like you found a good one.
All of my chickens have come from My Pet Chicken which is kind of a middle man for Meyer Hatchery in Polk, OH (at least that is my understanding).
As for your other question I guess it means how you define quality. If you are wanting your chickens to conform to the breed standard from an appearance standpoint then hatchery birds generally won't be the way to go. Hatchery birds are the breeds that they advertise but they likely won't be show quality in terms of looks if that makes sense. That said, the vast majority of them will be sexed correctly, healthy, and lay delicious eggs. I haven't bought any show quality birds but I would expect them to arrive unsexed. Sexing chickens is tricky, can be dangerous, and is a skill acquired through lots and lots of experience. That's why the hatcheries are so good-they do it all of the time. Expect a 90% success rate from a hatchery. I'd be surprised if you can find sexed day old chicks from a private breeder. Ultimately, you'll have to decide which route to go-I just wanted to put in a good word for the hatcheries as I think they overwhelmingly do a good job. I would pick one on the same side of the country you're on. The sooner your chicks arrive after hatching, the better.
