My Silkie has been having problems feeding but seemded to still want to feed. She has been separated from the others.she now has developed behaviour of sick sleepy bird, and poo is really smelly with some red mucus, shes had a bit to drink but no food, any treatment i can do to help her?

Hi Anna, I don't really know what to tell you. I suppose coccidiosis must be a consideration if you suspect the "red mucus" in her faeces to be blood. I know this isn't the only indication of cocci but if it is cocci and it has reached the stage of blood in the faeces then it must be treated correctly as much for the health of your other birds as for your sick silkie. I would get vetinary advice asap and keep a good eye on your other birds for signs that they might be going downhill too. I sincerely hope this is not the case for you. Best of luck.

Thankyou for your help, ive considered that so seeing vet today.she looks very sick.shes been away from the others now for three days.before that i took her away as i thought she was behaving strangely due to bullying. She was trying to feed but not reaching the food, eye sight or brain damage.such a shame shes a sweetie and my daughters pet.Fingers crossed .

If your vet will see her, do it. There is a GI infection that causes very smelly, runny droppings. Treatment is with copper sulfate and amoxicyllin. You will need your vet to dispense the antibiotic. I think you can get the copper sulfate at the feed store.

He might have to hydrate her with some sub q fluids, if its suggested go for it. That alone will boost her a ton.

Sounds like cocci. Add some Sulmet to her water ASAP. If she's not drinking, you may need to dribble some on the side of her beak to get her to drink.

Thankyou advice is a great support.Seen the vet,she saw poo sample and not concerned, still thinks neurological problem.Ive put her back with the others and watched carefully.she has really perked up,i think isolation was making things worse.so just seen her again shes grazing and big girls arent bothering her.fingers crossed.i may still need to take action.

Is this the same bird we've been talking about? You did not mention the smell.

If there is a GI tract infection it will not show as a bacterial infection under a standard parasite check. If she is still having the smelly runs then she still needs treatment or she will continue to get worse.

I'm confused - there are two posts about the same bird here, which sometimes spreads out facts.

Agreed with Robin's advice. Further more, some bacterial infections won't show up with a normal gram-negative bacterial check (like Clostridiums, which are similar to what you're describing - and very very smelly). They also aren't treatable with the same meds.

So again agreeing with Robin, I'd say to re-contact your vet, please. Personally I would advise a culture and sensitivity done for both clostridial types of bacteria as well as the normal collibacteria (E. coli, etc).

And a personal request that if you start a second thread, to be sure and post all the information on both posts - or better yet stick to one so that other people have a chance to be helped, too.

It'll serve you better in both respects as far as the quality of help you yourself receive.
