I decided to move my baby guineas and some chicks out of their brooder box yesterday. It was long overdue. The guineas are already getting their wattles (?), so they are at least 3 months old, probably more like 4. I kept putting it off, because I really didn't have any place I could lock them up that was any better than where they were.
My dad suggested putting them in his old chicken coop, but it had to be cleaned first.
He had probaby 40 birds in that coop, and it's only maybe 6' x 6'. Needless to say, the poo depth on the floor was sickening.
The top layer was dry, but underneath it was still wet
I wrapped a towel around my nose and mouth, but the ammonia was still so strong that I had to take breaks frequently so I could get a good breath. I must have taken 7 wheelbarrows full of straight poop out of that building.
So now I guess I have ammonia burns in my nose, and probably my throat too. It is making everything smell like pee, and it is disgusting
Anyone else ever had this (ammonia smell) problem? Anyway to resolve it?
