I have one guinea hen that calls (buckwheat) all day and NIGHT!! Is this normal? Why does she call so much...the rest of the flock is with her all the time, and sleep with her at night!! Anyone know why she does this and better yet how do I get her to STOP?!!!

Yes that's normal... especially if she's young, there's usually one bigmouth in every flock. I think it only serves a purpose in her own mind, lol. She should eventually outgrow it and quiet down some. If there's a light on in your coop at night, turning it off or using a lower wattage/dimmer bulb may help quiet her at night. As far as making her stop completely... you could either re-home her or give her a nice 8 hour crockpot bath, lol

I have one, too. I can hear her outside right now. Her name is, "For The Love Of God Would You Please Shut Up??"

Peeps... I hope she outgrows it! Although my hubby wants to taste one, but I said...it would be my luck that another would just pick up where she left off!

Thanks for the reply...we are in the process of making another coop a bit farther away from the house...maybe then I'll get some sleep at night! I just watched the 6 of them scare the living daylights out of a neighbors dog the other day! It was really funny to watch! Since they have gotten bigger not much coyote activity either!! YAY GUINEAS!!!

That is sooo funny! I may have to steal that name!!!

You don't want to do that or you'll have every guinea bird within a 30 mile radius at your house lol

When my mother visited, she would yell at the guineas. She'd be going 'Quiet! Hush! HEY!' and I was all 'You can't out shout them, they'll just scream louder mom.' But she'd ignore me and start scolding them again.

I would give my little 'wee-woo' whistle and they'd all go quiet and look at me.

'See?' I said to my mom. 'You have to use psychology. Too bad it doesn't last.'

And then, as if on cue, the buck-wheats started up again.

that is totally normal, especially in the first year, as they get more comfortable to normal sounds and activity they will settle down- and over time you can learn specific sounds mean certain things- danger, curiosity, warning of a plane flying over, wanting a treat-
