Really long Spurs!!

My little bantam rooster (Ruddy) has some acquired some really long spurs of late. Can spurs be trimmed
like nails or will this hurt him in any way. Wouldn't want to do anything to Ruddy. He is my daughters pet
Follows her around like a puppy dog. She can do anything to him. Need help. They are starting to turn in toward his leg.

I trim my rooster's spurs just like a trim my dogs nails, I even use the same trimmer. I only trim the sharp end off to round it off. If you cut too far down it will bleed just like a dog's toe nail will. I have to keep my roo's spurs kept short because one curls around and will grow into his leg, I clip the other one for me and my hen's safety. Its good to have some cornstarch handy when trimming so you can stop any bleeding that may occur if the cut is made too deep.

You can also use the dog clippers like plyers and if you twist just the right way the spur pops off and will eventually grow back but not to soon just be careful for if it begins to bleed but flower on it that will help stop the bleeding.

Hi, use the search option and type "rooster spurs". I replied in another thread exactly how to remove them with little blood and pain. We do our rooster spurs regularly-he doesn't like it much, but it doesn't hurt him-just his pride
