In the Brooder
I'm really pleased for you and your new chicks. Now be prepared to spend hours and hours wasting your time just watching them!
Mine are a week old, and I can't stop going out into the garden to see what they're exploring for the first time with their mum. They've already found the dustbathing areas and the bird feeder with all the dropped seeds, and mum has taught them that every time I come out of the back door there's a pretty good chance of treats, so they need to come running fast! They're so cute - everything is new and exciting and different (and sometimes scary!) Today my husband put the mower over the lawn - I was terrified that it would freak the chicks out, but they stayed close to mum, out of the way of the mower, and were absolutely fine!
That's Brilliant KayTee. We are pretty crazy here at the moment. I have an indoor nursery and then an outdoor nursery and then the main coop. Because of the high risk of predators here I have had to make sure that the chicks that are outside are in a run. Once they're big enough they will get out and I'm sure they will have great fun following mum. Must remember to cut the grass first!! I just hope they are big enough to go out before the next lot need the outside nursery run.
This is our first experience of chicks. We have had chickens for over seven years but they have been rescue chickens and they have never produced chicks. So when we got the chance to have some bantums we decide to take it up.
We did hope for chicks but I have to say going from four chickens to 26 chickens in 4 weeks is a bit of a shock!! The husband is doing over time just now so we can buy yet another coop! I do not know how many are boys I don't even know how to sex same but I hope most are girls even if there are some boys we will probably keep them as long as they get along. We have a little area that they use as a dust bath but I think we'll have to expand it!! I am hopefully getting a poly tunnel put up this year so it will be a great opportunity to remodel the garden so I have my gardening Area the kids have their play Area and the chickens have the rest of the garden and it's a big garden!!
